Life’s Philosophy

One of the most significant aspects of our lives is having a framework for a good living. A philosophy of life. Paradoxically, it is one of the things we think the least. Mainly because we are burdened with urgent, petty issues that distract us from thinking deeper about what is the purpose and meaning of our lives.

A great deal has been written about purpose and meaning. Even more has to be written. But better than writing about these, we need to act on these.

Let’s go to the why. Why do we want to have a purposeful and meaningful life? Some would say that it is because having a purpose in life will help us feel better when facing difficulties. Some would say that having purpose will give us the strength to surpass and overcome obstacles. That, having a meaningful life will help us to develop gratitude and thus help us in the pursuit of happiness.

Religious people, for sure, agree with us that religion gives the philosophical framework for a good life. Basically, all religions have statements and guides related to living a virtuous life. Honesty, truthfulness, and service to the community are the elements that guide a virtuous life. Greek philosophers and later Roman philosophers had articulated balance as an element of virtue. Courage and Temperance, Justice and Wisdom have been cardinal directions in our lives since.

In particular, Stoic Philosophy. One philosophy that over the last years has gained many adherents. Probably because it fits well with Western culture. It is for me the best philosophy to guide my purpose and meaning, and it goes well with my Christian worldview.
